How to Optimize the file size of Images
While internet connection speeds continue to improve over the world, there has been a large shift in how users access your content – with a growing population using mobile devices as the primary way they navigate the web. Search engines, like Google, now factor page weight (the total size of all elements on the page) into how it ranks your pages. Decreasing the size of images is both essential to ranking your website and improving user experience on your site.
Here are a few tools you can use to decrease the size of images:
- Compressor.io is a free tool that will significantly reduce the total size of your photos while attempting to maintain the quality of your images. Compressor.io runs online and lets you upload JPG, PNG, GIF or SVG files and will spit out an optimized version of the image. The only downside is that it requires you to upload files one at a time.
- Optimizilla is another free online service that will compress your images. However, it will let you mass-upload several images and even let you play around with the compression settings on each image to see whether you can squeeze out some extra savings.
- RIOT is a free program that will help you optimize and compare your images in real-time. It provides a lot of features, such as editing the EXIF metadata, adding an image mask and making light edits to your photos. It even supports batch edits and processing.
- EWWW Image Optimizer is free WordPress plugin that will automatically optimize your images as you upload to your blog. It can even optimize images you already uploaded to your media library.
